Do You Need Artistic Talent to Learn Painting?

So you want to learn painting but you are worried about your lack of artistic talent standing in your way. Painting just like anything else is a learned skill that you must practice at in order to get better.

The masters of painting did not just pick up a paint brush and create museum worthy pieces of art. In fact many great classics have been studied to find multiple layers of paint and other images underneath. The great ones all made mistakes in their journey to learn painting. And you will too.

Having artistic talent is often something that is inherent in all of us, but has not been cultivated for some reason. Maybe it is because the last time you painted was the once a week art class in elementary school, which was probably not a very focused study in painting anyway.

Think back. When was the last time that you picked up a paint brush? It probably has been a long time, unless of course you have a preschooler at home.

Actually if you do have a child, take time to really watch them paint. They tend to do so with absolutely no hesitation. They love to experiment and don’t worry about messing up. It is usually a purely joyful experience for them and they do not worry about what others think of their work.

Your early practice with painting should be like that. Don’t worry about what others think during your early efforts. Paint to retrain yourself to find the inner joy that you experienced as a child.

During this early period of taking a brush to paper or canvas is the time to discover what you enjoy best about painting and then further your studies and practice in that direction. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different types of paints, brushes, and papers. If you find that you are enjoying watercolors or oil paints, then stick with that.

The most important thing to remember is that it will take practice to develop your artistic talent while you learn painting. Life is not a race and it will take time to get there. It is possible to train yourself and find your artistic talent though.

It is also important to not learn painting alone. Take a class or find a home study class that you can learn from. Painting has been a learned skill for thousands of years and there is a ton of instruction that you can draw from.
